An untitled comedy series featuring Kunal Kemmu is in the works for Netflix India's adaptation of the American police sitcom Brooklyn Nine-Nine. As per reports, the actor would step into the shoes of Andy Samberg as Jake Peralta on the NBC/Fox series, which aired from 2013 until 2021.
Kemmu, who has appeared in iconic films like Go Goa Gone, Golmaal franchise, Lootcase, and Bhaag Johnny, will play the role of quick-witted yet impetuous detective Jake Peralta in the Indian adaptation. As per reports in Peeping Moon, known for his work on Rishta.com and Dhoom Dhaam, filmmaker Rishab Seth is now directing the adaptation. One of Seth's regular collaborators, Aarsh Vora, wrote the screenplay.
Once filming for Kemmu's Netflix movie Single Papa concludes in October, production is expected to commence. Moreover, the actor is set to reprise his role in Rohit Shetty's upcoming Golmaal 5 and is also attached to Raj & DK's Gulkanda Tales on Prime Video. He also has his second feature film as a director in the works, following the surprise blockbuster Madgaon Express from last year.
Banijay Asia, known for the French comedy-drama Call My Agent: Bollywood adaptation, is teaming up with Netflix India once again to produce the new series. With Deepak Dhar at the helm, Banijay Asia has become known for localising foreign intellectual properties for use in India. The Night Manager, The Good Wife, and The Trial are all Hindi adaptations in their library, and there are supposedly several others on the way.
The original Brooklyn Nine-Nine revolved around a group of investigators from the made-up 99th precinct of the Brooklyn division of the New York Police Department. The show tackled socially relevant problems including racial profiling, LGBTQ+ representation, and workplace dynamics with a light-hearted tone and a diverse ensemble. The show gained fame for its cold openings and the humorous timings of each character. This Indian version now only has Kemmu on board. The makers will decide the casting for characters such as Captain Raymond Holt, Amy Santiago, and the rest of the precinct once we finish the script.
The original has an international following and eight seasons of popularity; the Indian adaptation will adapt the show while keeping its essence.
