Kurukshetra is an animated mythological series that will premiere on October 10 on Netflix. It offers a modern spin on the ancient Indian epic, Mahabharata. Crowned as the inaugural mythological animation on Netflix India, the series analyses the epic 18-day conflict and the moral dilemmas experienced by its protagonists. The new promotional video features the Pandava family and Queen Draupadi, presenting them as the "Pillars of Dharma" (morality).

Visual style and animation

Featuring a fusion of lively, clean animation with traditional architectural and aesthetic aspects from India, the one-minute and fifty-second video offers a highly stylised visual experience. Especially in the natural and palace environments, a deliberately rich colour palette of emerald greens, gold, deep reds, and brilliant blues dominates the sights. The video presents the main figures from the Pandava side in a dramatic manner.

Lord Krishna, the celestial sage, plays the flute as the video opens in a tranquil royal garden. As the story goes, he is "the upholder of justice and the protector of truth" while dressed in crimson and yellow with ornate gold jewellery and a turban that includes a peacock feather. Introducing the five Pandava brothers: The eldest, Dharmaraj Yudhishthir, wears white and gold, representing truth and responsibility. The next is about a fearsome giant-like figure called "Maharathi Gadadhari Bheem" (mace-wielding warrior). He is portrayed practicing with a huge golden necklace and an elaborate golden mace. "Gandiv Dhari Arjun" is the third brother, and he is depicted with a heavy gold necklace and an assured, powerful posture; he is revered as the "Sarvashreshtha Dhanurdhar"—the greatest archer—and as "Abhay"—the fearless—and "Ajay"—the immortal. Sitting side by side, dressed in identical green and red, are the twin brothers Nakul and Sahadev.

Queen Draupadi's portrayal and the conflict

By the end of the video, Queen Draupadi is introduced as "Saubhagyashalini" (blessed with fortune), also known as "Dev Sundari Panchali Draupadi" (divine beauty). She wears a stunning maroon and gold ensemble, accessorised with heavy traditional jewellery and a crown, and stands out against a beautiful, sunny backdrop of trees and flowers. The promo depicts the impending confrontation as emotionally intense and epic in scope.
