Viewers got to see a glimpse of Aamir Khan as Bollywood’s very own Forrest Gump when the highly awaited trailer of Laal Singh Chaddha was finally released on Sunday. The upcoming film is the Hindi remake of the 1994 Academy Award winning movie, which starred Tom Hanks as the title character. The road to getting the remake made has not been easy for Khan, whose efforts to get the film’s rights has led him to cross paths with Hollywood bigwigs like Steven Spielberg. When Khan and Spielberg met, the latter chose a unique term to address the actor when introducing him to Hanks.

As per multiple reports, Khan reportedly flew to Germany between 2014-2015, to meet up with Steven Spielberg. Khan had been unsuccessful in trying to get a meeting with Forrest Gump director Robert Zemeckis to get the rights to the latter’s film. The Bollywood star had decided to meet with Spielberg as he heard that the latter had a good relationship with Zemeckis. That was where Khan met Hanks.

While introducing Khan to Hanks, Spielberg had reportedly described the former as the ‘James Cameron of India’. Spielberg used the comparison as, like Cameron, Khan’s new releases would break the box office records set by his previous ones. That was when Hanks revealed that he was already familiar with Khan’s work. The Forrest Gump actor revealed that he had in fact seen 3 Idiots almost three times.

Spielberg had told Khan that the reason Zemeckis did not want to meet was because he did not want to refuse Khan in person. But Khan had persevered nonetheless, and had finally managed to get the film’s remake rights.

Laal Singh Chaddha will be released in theatres on August 11.
