Thalapathy Vijay's upcoming movie Leo is one of the highly-anticipated movies of this year. The producers have started online promotions by releasing exciting new posters of the movie, giving us glimpses into the movie's story, character arc and treatment.

Leo is said to have made record-setting deals in terms of its pre-theatrical revenue. The sale of streaming rights has become one of the main sources of income, second only to the theatrical collection, to the producers.

Tamil cinema's biggest OTT deal

Especially, the makers of Leo have made probably the biggest deal in the Tamil film industry with a streaming giant. And with big money comes big obligations.

Netflix has reportedly acquired the streaming rights of Leo for a whopping Rs 125 crore. As per the contract, Leo must be reportedly made available for streaming on the platform within four weeks after its release.

The pandemic has significantly disrupted the way movies are made and consumed worldwide, and India is no exception.

The Covid-induced lockdown hastened the growth of streaming platforms in the country, making it an indisputable of our movi-watching experience. This has also drastically changed a movie's shelf life at the box office.

When will Leo start streaming on OTT?

In South India, a new movie premiering on a streaming platform within four to five weeks of its release has become an industry standard. All small and big-budget movies fall into this category.

Take, for example, Superstar Rajinikanth's Jailer. Even as the movie was running successfully in cinemas worldwide, it became available on Amazon Prime Video less than four weeks after its release.

Similarly, Leo will also need to honour the contractual obligations. If the reports about the four-week release window are true, then the movie will start streaming on Netflix by November 21.

Written and directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, Leo will hit the screens worldwide on October 19. The movie also stars Trisha, Sanjay Dutt, Arjun, Priya Anand, Mysskin, and Gautham Menon in the supporting cast.
