Santhosh Sivan, the cinematographer-director teamed up with Prithviraj Sukumaran for historical drama Urumi, when a time it was almost unthinkable for Malayalam film industry. The movie, which has been considered a path-breaking attempt, eventually earned the cult status and has been considered one of the finest period films made in Malayalam.

Dulquer Salmaan appeared in a double role as KTN Kottoor, and a young blogger named Ravi Chandrasekharan in Njaan, which is helmed by Ranjith. The movie, which is set in the backdrop of India’s freedom struggle, is penned by popular writer TP Rajeevan. Even though the period drama was widely loved by the cine-goers, it ended up as a box office failure.

Hariharan, the veteran filmmaker teamed up with legendary writer MT Vasudevan Nair for the period social drama Parinayam. The movie, which features Mohini, Manoj K Jayan, and Vineeth in the lead roles, depicts the story of a young widowed Namboothiri woman in the backdrop of ‘Smartha Vicharam’ (the infamous trial organized to punish ‘morally corrupted’ Brahmin women).

Cast: Prem Nazir, Madhu, Mammootty, Mohanlal, Shankar, Lakshmi, Poornima Bhagyaraj

Padayottam, the Jijo Punnoose directorial that hit the theatres in 1982, has considered one of the best period films ever produced by the Malayalam film industry. The movie, which is based on Alexandre Dumas’ novel ‘The Count Of Monte Christo’, featured a stellar star cast including Prem Nazir, Madhu, Mammootty, Mohanlal, Lakshmi, and others in the lead roles.

Cast: Lal, Mallika, Shweta Menon, Asif Ali, Bhavana, Jagadish

This period drama, which is helmed by actor-director Madhupal, earned immense love from the audiences and critics. Ozhimuri narrates the story of Meenakshi Pillai, the 55-year-old woman who seeks divorce from her abusive 71-year-old husband, Thanu Pillai, to live the rest of her life and die freely, as an independent woman.
