The Malayalam film Lokah Chapter 1 Chandra, directed by Dominic Arun and backed by actor Dulquer Salman is in its fourth weekend at the box office, and still going strong. The Kalyani Priyadarshan-led film was said to be OTT bound by the 30-day mark, but its theatrical performance has prompted the makers to extend the box office run, giving audiences a longer chance to experience it on the big screen. On September 20, the big news was that the Onam release had become the highest grossing Malayalam film ever.

Close on the heels of that monumental bit of information came the next that the film is set to become the highest grossing Malayalam film in Karnataka by the end of the 4th weekend in theatres. Karnataka is the only south state where a dubbed version was not released, perhaps because the film is set in Bengaluru and has a fair bit of spoken Kannada. Lokah Chapter 1 Chandra had grossed Rs 13.23 cr as of its fourth Friday.
The film is only Rs 1.5 cr behind the current highest grosser, Manjummel Boys, and if its third weekend performance is anything to go by, that’s a figure it will likely get to over the weekend of September 20-21. A quick look at ticket aggregator sites hints at the possibility of Lokah Chapter 1 Chandra achieving this feat easily.
The film, meanwhile, a modern-day retelling of the Kalliyankattu Neeli folklore, giving Neeli, now going as Chandra, a superhero spin. It is part of a proposed 5-part franchise, with Tovino Thomas’ Michael – a chathan with 390 siblings – next in line to get a solo movie. Kalyani’s Chandra and other new characters will be a part of the upcoming films too. Director Dominic has been quoted as saying that he will soon go back to the drawing board to plan the next film.
