Sudheer Babu, last seen in Hunt, the Telugu remake of Prithviraj Sukumaran’s Mumbai Police, is gearing up for his second release in 2023. His next is Maama Mascheendra, a crime comedy that marks the directorial debut of popular writer, actor Harshavardhan (who’d also written the dialogues for Manam, Gunde Jaari Gallanthayyinde). Eesha Rebba, Mirnalini Ravi play the female leads.
For the first time in his career, he essays a triple role in Maama Mascheendra. He is cast as the obese Durga, an ageing don Parasuram and a young DJ in the film. Suniel Narang and Puskur Ram Mohan Rao are bankrolling the film under Sree Venkateswara Cinemas in association with Srishti Celluloid. Sonali Narang, Srishti present the film. Mahesh Babu unveiled the film’s teaser today.
The teaser serves the purpose of introducing Sudheer’s three avatars to audiences. While the overweight Durga is desperate to find the love of his life, a DJ is wary about falling for a guy. Meanwhile, another gangster Parasuram is after his two lookalikes. Eesha falls for the obese guy and Mirnalini Ravi is after the DJ. What connects the worlds of the trio?
The opening dialogue in the teaser, with reference to salvation and the choice for a human to spend seven births as a devotee or three births as a demon sets the tone perfectly. Harshavardhan, Shakalaka Shankar also play important roles in the film. The contrasting love lives of Sudheer Babu’s characters makes for interesting viewing. However, the CG for the obese role is distracting, to put it mildly.
Chaitan Bharadwaj scores the music for the film while PG Vinda is the cinematographer. Rajeev is the art director. The crime-comedy is expected to have a summer-end release. Harshavardhan was to make his directorial debut with Good Bad Ugly, starring Sreemukhi, though its release was stalled owing to the producer’s financial issues.
