Mari Selvaraj's Maamannan, which was released in theatres a month ago, received appreciation from critics and moviegoers though a few of its aspects garnered criticism as well. The film went on to become the highest grosser in Udhayanidhi's career.
Vadivelu's performance, Fahadh Faasil's presence, Theni Eswar's visuals and AR Rahman's music were a few elements that received a unanimous positive response. The first half of the social drama was thoroughly engaging while the latter half had a few issues including logical loopholes.
Udhayanidhi played a doting son who raises his voice against those who suppressed his father, while Vadivelu played a politician who hails from a marginalized community. Fahadh essayed the role of a powerful politician who is obsessed with caste pride.
It is evident that the antagonist character is projected in a bad manner till the end of the film. His toxic nature has been visibly criticized in the movie and the actor played the role to perfection. However, what is happening now on social media after Maamannan's OTT premiere is something the makers wouldn't have anticipated. Many videos glorifying Fahadh's character are doing the rounds on social media.
As if this isn't enough, many peppy songs from yesteryear movies are added to those videos to elevate the character and its screen presence. However, little do they realize that they are sabotaging the efforts made by film's makers in calling out the discrimination prevailing in society.
On the other hand, there are those who criticize makers for not designing Udhayanidhi's character in a strong manner because of which the antagonist is walking away with laurels. Fahadh completely dominating Udhay in terms of acting and screen presence is another reason a few point out for the former's glorifying videos on social media.
