Director Mari Selvaraj's film Maamannan is Udhayanidhi Stalin's last film as an actor. The Tamil Nadu Minister for Youth Welfare and Sports Development announced that the film would be his last in his acting career. However, to make the film happen, Udhayanidhi had to make a request to both Chiyaan Vikram and Dhanush.

Mari Selvaraj was busy with the pre-production of Dhruv Vikram's film, when he got a call from Udhayanidhi. Talking to Cinema Vikatan, Mari Selvaraj said, "Udhayanidhi sir called me and said that he was planning to stop working in films and shared his wish to do one last film. He said that he wanted me to do the project."

He added,"The script for Dhruv's film was finalised and I was about to begin the shoot in a month's time. After that, I was supposed to begin my next project with Dhanush. I apprised Udhay sir about my situation and he said that he will talk to both of them. Both Vikram sir and Dhanush sir heeded his request."

Mari Selvaraj said that he didn't have anything particularly written for Udhayanidhi at that point of time. "I told him that I had this project in mind." Maamannan is set in the western belt of Tamil Nadu and the story predominantly takes place in Salem. "I always wanted to talk about the politics of western Tamil Nadu. When I decide a story, we think which backdrop will have a greater impact on the plot. When Udhay sir asked me where the shooting was to be held, I said Salem. He was surprised. I told him that this plot would work better there."

Maamannan stars Vadivelu, Udhayanidhi Stalin, Fahadh Faasil and Keerthy Suresh in the lead. The film has music by AR Rahman. The film is all set to hit screens in June.
