Maargan is about a strange serial killer who targets victims by blackening their face. With the latest incident being of a young woman who has just celebrated her birthday, Vijay Antony's Dhruv takes up the case unofficially, as he knows that his late daughter too was murdered in the similar fashion. Evidences and forensic reports lead them to Tamilarivu, who is an ace swimmer with eidetic memory. While all evidences point towards Tamilarivu, further investigations reveal that he is innocent. However, Dhruv and his team then employ Tamilarivu and his skills to use and with igniting his out of body experience, they nearly track the killer’s next victim.

It is at this point the police manage to locate the next victim, Vennila, as they track her with a camera, it is revealed that Vennila who is originally dark skinned, has been taking treatment from a cosmetologist to play the biopic of PV Sindhu for a film. However, owing to her complexion, she has been replaced with a much-fairer daughter of the producer. After facing constant rejections due to her colour, it is then revealed that Vennila has been taking her anger out by murdering all those who are fair-skinned and for those she was rejected. She was the one who murdered Dhruv’s daughter after her former boyfriend rejected Vennila for her, and the woman at the beginning of the film whose lover she had proposed to. The film ends on a social issue about society’s obsession over fair skin.
