At the time of this interview, the multi-hyphenated Tamil film personality Vijay Antony had a lot going on. The composer, producer, editor, actor, and singer is gearing up for the release of Tamil film Maargan on June 27, and that is just not it. Some last-minute production formalities for the film, along with promotions, two more releases lined up for 2025, the shooting of his Tamil film Lawyer is ongoing, two concerts in the pipeline this month, including an international one, and one project being mounted. It is amid all this that Vijay Antony is determined to return every call I made before this interview took place, a quality that is a rarity when celebrities have tonnes of things to deal with.

“If not for these errands that need to be met immediately, I would have returned the call even before,” humbly says Vijay Antony, as we proceed to talk about Maargan, the first thing Vijay Antony prioritised to do that morning.

Maargan actor Vijay Antony Interview:

Despite handling the various facets of filmmaking and running his own production company, Vijay Antony remains steadfast in his stance that cinema is not hard. But has it become harder for them to bring an audience to theatres, given there is no dearth of content in today’s times? “Well, even that is not harder. Say you keep a sweet box open; it will attract some houseflies because those insects want it. Similarly, if you present people with what they want, they will automatically come. Content will never go unnoticed. And even if it does not, it doesn’t mean that it will seal the fate. If you want someone else to recognise your life, then you are in the wrong thought process. You make a film which is good enough, and due to some reasons, it goes unwatched. In fact, why do you think I am talking right now as the first thing? It is because we do as much as possible to take the film to people.”

Vijay Antony adds that his name is also a potential factor to bring people to theatres. “When my name is attached, there is some degree of goodwill attached. I had a good name, until a few films which did not do well. Now, we are gaining it back. I think with Maargan, good word of mouth, and initial pull, we hope the film reaches a lot more people,” he mentions.

He addresses about how conversations around films have gained prominence in society. “We speak only 5 out of 10 films. There are about 200 films releasing a year. Small films are yet to get the publicity that the big films get now. And even if they speak, it is only because we want to gain some attention among people.”

Thriller has been a genre in which Vijay Antony has been seen frequently. After the release of his recent films, Hitler and Mazhai Pidikkatha Manithan, which also belong to the genre, Maargan also seem to belong to the same genre, albeit with a supernatural twist. Directed by Leo John Paul, Vijay Antony speaks about how he is picking films from what comes his way. “I am launching my nephew Ajay Dhishan with Maargan, who will be playing the antagonist instead of launching him as a solo hero. I hope his character leaves some impression on the audience.” Vijay Antony mentions that Maargan is not just a murder mystery, but has another layer to it. “I have known Leo John Paul for a while, and he, too, has and is an editor. Editing a film is very important, and all these factors contribute to the making of this film.”

‘I am not an actor, I am just Vijay Antony’

Even as 13 years have passed since Vijay Antony made a debut as an actor with Naan, he still continues to say, “I am not an actor. From the beginning, I am just Vijay Antony. I speak dialogues as a character, and if that character resonates with the audience, the film will run. Just my acting will not guarantee the success of the film. I am more into script, production and post-production, and I don’t bother about actor Vijay Antony at all.”

The Maargan actor also mentions that he has a “common man behaviour” onscreen and since he knows his limitations, he has a set pattern of working. “My limitation is that I am able to do everything, but I know what is suitable for me. I think all the strength lies in the script and not me. So, it is all about the script and director and less about me.”

For a change, Vijay Antony chose to give editing to Leo John Paul. Asked if that has brought any changes in his working style, he says, “Had I done it, the work would have increased and probably I would have done a little more ahead. I usually like to keep films between 2 hours and 2 hours and 15 minutes. It depends on film to film and if a film is good, one can watch for three hours.”

Wrapping up the conversation, Vijay Antony who shares the release plans of his upcoming films, including Shakthi Thirumagan and Lawyer by this year, says, “I would like to give proper time for the pre-production and post-production of films. I cannot sit idle at home, and this is my way of working.”
