Madras Matinee’s engaging plot
The 2025 Tamil film begins with a sci-fi author, who has to write about the real-life struggles of ordinary people. He is not particularly fascinated by the middle class, but does a close look at their struggles make him see things differently. The film then follows the life of auto driver Kannan and the struggles of his family. The film, scripted and directed by Karthikeyan Mani, then presents their everyday life as they strive to make ends meet, pay up the bills and keep their family members satisfied. Their emotions and the every day drama too get portrayed in the film with a subtle humour playing on the sidelines.
Sathyaraj leads the dynamic cast
Noted actor Sathyaraj, who rose to national fame with Baahubali films, plays the character of the sci-fi writer Ramayya. Kaali Venkat plays the other lead role of the auto driver Kannan. Roshni Haripriyan, Shelly, Vishva, Sunil Sukhada, Madhumitha, and Geetha Kailasam also form part of the dynamic cast along with George Maryan, Archana Chandoke, and Chaams.
Rooted, relatable characters
Even though films focussing on working class struggles have been presented before, Madras Matinee tries to bring in a fresh perspective and makes us empathize with the relatable characters. Not just Kannan as the the regular Joe, but the other family members too make a mark in the film, which also raises a point about generational gap and the changing times. Roshni Haripriyan as Kannan’s daughter Deepika, who lands a big opportunity but still has to resist her family’s attempts to settle her in a marriage.
Madras Matinee’s ‘real’ setting
The film is well-supported by a technical department, with Anand GK’s crisp frames taking us through the bylanes, the small rooms of their homes, and the wide roads of Chennai. The production design by Jacki also ensures that the film exudes the lived experience. KC Balasarangan, who serves as the music director, sets the right tone for the movie.
