Mahesh Babu's Athadu re-release date locked; Sequel talks heat up

Athadu is one of the biggest hits in the career of Telugu superstar Mahesh Babu. Released in 2005, Athadu went on to become a cult classic in Telugu cinema and was directed by Trivikram Srinivas. The film had new-age making and negative shades for the main lead, which was a rarity in those days, especially in Telugu films.
On the occasion of Mahesh Babu's birthday on August 9, 2025, Athadu is getting a record re-release. Legendary Telugu actor Murali Mohan has produced the film on a massive scale. Speaking ahead of the re-release, he stated there has been huge pressure to re-release the film for the last two years, and so he decided to finally go for it. “Athadu has been remastered in 8K and will be loved by the audience,” says Murali Mohan.
Ever since the film's re-release date was locked, news about the sequel has become a topic of discussion. When asked about the same, the legendary actor says if at all a sequel is made, it will only have Mahesh Babu as the lead, and plans are on for the same.
Athadu had great music by Mani Sharma, and the comedy scenes featuring Brahmanandam are a riot in the second half. The bookings are open, and tickets are already being sold at an aggressive pace. The fans will surely make this an event when the film comes out, as the re-release culture has taken off in Tollywood.
Trivikram made heads turn with Athadu
Athadu is quite special in many ways as Trivikram Srinivas became a director to watch out for with this film, which did not do great business when it first released.
Murali Mohan also states that Athadu ended as an average fare at the box office and later became a cult film, thanks to OTT and satellite screenings. Athadu is also a special film for Trisha Krishnan as it fetched her a superstar status in Telugu cinema. She signed multiple films after Athadu, and her chemistry and comedy scenes with Mahesh Babu are much loved.
