Ranbir Kapoor's film Animal was the biggest blockbuster of 2023. The film, directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, had its theatrical release in December last year. Despite its massive box office success, Animal opened to severe criticism from a certain section of the audience. It was alleged that the 2023 film promoted toxic masculinity and misogyny. Eight months after its theatrical release, veteran filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt has spoken about his son-in-law's film Animal receiving severe backlash.

In an interview with Hindustan Times, Mahesh Bhatt shared his thoughts about Ranbir Kapoor's movie Animal being subjected to criticism. He said, "That's also part of entertainment… It is a blood sport. You get into the arena and there will be people celebrating you falling down and there will be people celebrating you triumphing. So that's a part of it."

The senior director believes the world has very few performers and most people are spectators. Bhatt thinks that the world belongs to the creators and not to those who throw brickbats at good performers.

"It takes another kind of audacity to be a performer. These are occupational hazards. You can't have it both. You stand in the sun, you get sunburnt," he added.

Ranbir Kapoor breaks silence on Animal backlash

A month ago, Ranbir Kapoor reacted to heavy criticism of his movie Animal. The actor told entrepreneur Nikhil Kamath that social media played havoc after his movie was released. Kapoor believed social media users needed something to talk about and they went ahead to call Animal a 'misogynistic film'.

Apart from Ranbir, the Sandeep Reddy Vanga directorial featured Rashmika Mandanna, Anil Kapoor, Triptii Dimri, and Bobby Deol in key roles. The film minted over Rs 900 crore (gross) at the worldwide box office.

Meanwhile, on the work front, Ranbir is working on Nitesh Tiwari's Ramayana, where he will play Lord Ram. He will be seen alongside Yash, Sai Pallavi and others.
