Malaikottai Vaaliban, Mohanlal starrer helmed by Lijo Jose Pellissery, has been receiving mixed reviews from the Malayalam cinema audience. The movie is struggling to perform well at the box office.
Malaikottai Vaaliban, the period fantasy drama that stars Mohanlal in the titular role, has opened to mixed reviews. The Lijo Jose Pellissery directorial, which was one of the most anticipated films of the year, hit the big screens on January 25, 2024. However, the negative responses from the audiences have clearly affected the performance of the project at the box office, especially in Kerala.
When Malaikottai Vaaliban completed its first Monday at the theatres, the movie has failed to make it big at the box office. As per the reports, the Mohanlal starrer has witnessed a major downfall in occupancy (especially in Kerala) with was reportedly dipped to around 10.78 percent, when it completed the first 5 days of its release.
According to the latest updates from trade experts, Malaikottai Vaaliban is now struggling to touch even the Rs. 25 crore mark at the box office, even after completing 5 days at the theatres. The recent reports suggest that the Mohanlal starrer has made around just Rs. 23.6 crore at the worldwide box office. Notably, even the long weekend and public holiday (Republic Day 2024) have not favoured the Lijo Jose Pellissery directorial when it comes to its box office collections.
It is highly surprising that the Mohanlal starrer, which is made with a massive budget of over Rs. 60 crore, is struggling to make it big at the box office. The massive pre-release hype and heavy promotions have not helped the film in gaining more occupancy even during the weekend. The negative word-of-mouth, social media trolling, and mixed reviews have made a huge impact on the film’s collections. If things proceed at the same rate, Malaikottai Vaaliban might end up as a failure, just like Mohanlal’s highly publicized outings Marakkar: Arabikadalinte Simham and Aaraattu.
In that case, it is safe to assume that Malaikottai Vaaliban will have its OTT release on Disney+ Hotstar by the end of February 2024. As per the reports, the streaming giant bagged the OTT rights of the Mohanlal starrer for a record price. The Lijo Jose Pellissery directorial is expected to stream in five languages, including Malayalam, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada, on the platform. The official OTT release date is expected to be announced very soon.
