Call it unfortunate or ironic, some of the most celebrated romantic tales ended in tragedy with the lovers either separated or dead, as in Laila-Majnu, Romeo-Juliet or even Jack-Rose from Titanic. Malayalam cinema too has its share of romantic dramas where our beloved couples had to part ways due to fate or mean human interventions. The most heart-aching one would be Mohanlal’s Vandanam, when Unni and Gaadha went their separate ways even after being agonisingly close. There are also George and Malar Miss from Premam, and Moideen and Kanchanamala in Ennu Ninte Moideen. As the world celebrates Valentine’s Day, let’s pause to remember those Malayalam onscreen couples who deserved their happily ever after. These films are available to stream on OTTplay Premium.

Malayali cop Unnikrishanan (Mohanlal) arrives in Bangalore to nab a culprit, but ends up falling for his daughter Gaadha (Girija Shettar). Even amid the investigation, Unni flirts and finally wins over Gaadha. But after the case was wrapped up, the Priyadarshan film chose not to unite Unni and Gaadha. Even as they sit in adjacent cabs at a traffic junction, they never see each other and move on, believing the other do not care or love enough. In the new AI age, netizens have sought to reunite Unni and Gaadah in fan-created reels.

Nivin Pauly stars as the college rebel George, who falls for Malar Miss at first sight. Actress Sai Pallavi brings an elegant charm to Malar in Premam, which also marked her acting debut. Though director Alphonse Puthren’s film depicts George’s romantic trysts with three women, fans rooted for George-Malar Miss. But they part ways after the teacher loses her memory in an accident and she no longer remembers him. At the end as George marries Celine, Malar Miss attends his reception. As she departs, her cousin asks Malar if she should have told the truth to George, hinting that she remembers him and their relationship.

Maathan is on the run after getting involved in a criminal incident, with the cops closing in on him. But he still heads to meet Aparna, Appu, who does not want anything to do with him. Even when she asks him to just leave, a dejected Maathan looks up and says ‘ok, then I will come later,’ highlighting the hopeless romantic he is. By the time, Appu comes around, Maathan is shot dead by cops but she remains unaware. Tovino Thomas stars as the lovable Maathan, while Aishwarya Lekshmi is seen as Appu who takes a practical look at romance.
Another Mohanlal-Priyadarshan film that ended on a tragic note. Kalyani’s fiance dumps her after she chooses him over his father’s wealth. Her uncle finds Vishnu to play the role of her husband when Kalyani’s father comes home for holidays from the US. After initial bickering, they fall for each other deeply before Kalyani learns that Vishnu is a convict who is awaiting the gallows. The climax scene as Vishnu bids goodbye to Kalyani would leave most viewers teary-eyed.
Based on the real-life tale of Moideen and Kanchanamala, the film narrates the tale of a young Hindu woman and a Muslim youth. Their families objected to their relationship, and the young couple decided to elope. But when he was returning after making plans, Moideen drowned in a boat accident and Kanchana continued to live on with his memories.

This Lal Jose film narrates the tale of Ravi, who goes from being a wayward medical student to a committed doctor. The love story or rather the tragic end of his relationship with Sainu has a life-altering effect on him. His attempts to reach Sainu are thwarted by a cop which prompts Ravi to take revenge on his asthmatic daughter. But he learns his lesson, transforming his life with the help of his mentor. Actor-director Prithviraj Sukumaran plays Dr Ravi, while Samvrutha Sunil is the lovely Sainu. The song ‘Azhalinte’ continues to be a fan-favourite.
