A key reason that has got a lot of the audience excited about Mammootty’s upcoming direct-to-OTT release Puzhu is that the megastar will be playing a full-length negative role in Ratheena’s directorial. It’s been a while since Mammootty has taken up such a challenge.

In an interview with Malayala Manorama, the megastar, who is also gearing up for his OTT debut with the Sony LIV release, opened up about playing the role in the thriller, which also has Parvathy Thiruvothu as the female protagonist.

When asked if essaying a negative character would affect his image, Mammootty said, “I have only wished to be a good actor. That’s the only image that I have.” The actor said that an artiste can’t always remain a protagonist or a superstar, and it will keep changing with time. “But an actor will remain an actor,” he added. Mammootty explained that he has always maintained that his stance has been to be known as a good artiste.

While Puzhu has him in a negative role, the actor said that he doesn’t consider that just because the character has dark shades, he would be hated. “If you fear that, you won’t be able to act,” said Mammootty. The actor also stated that humans are flawed and no one is 100% complete.

In the interview, Mammootty also said that he has always tried to update himself and has been conscious about what he can and cannot do. The actor further stated that he has tried different new themes in his previous movies but many of them had gone unnoticed.

Puzhu, which is scripted by Harshad, Suhas and Sharfu, will release in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Hindi on Sony LIV on May 13. The movie is co-produced by Dulquer Salmaan’s Wayfarer Films.
