The Jeo Baby directorial, which pairs Mammotty with Jyothika, was earlier rumoured to be a direct-to-OTT release, but is finding its way to theatres
Last evening, Malayalam superstar Mammootty had announced that the theatrical release date of his next, Kaathal – The Core, would be made public on November 3. The film, directed by Jeo Baby of The Great Indian Kitchen fame, is a family drama in which Mammootty is paired with Jyothika, who returns to Malayalam cinema after many years. The duo play a bickering couple in the film, which explores family dynamics, among others. It was then speculated that Kaathal – The Core would release after Deepavali and November 24 was said to be the D-Day. Turns out, these rumours were not totally unfounded. The film is a post-Deepavali release, but it is coming a day earlier on November 23. Moments ago, Mammootty took to social media to announce the film’s theatrical release date.
Produced by Mammootty’s home banner Mammootty Kampany, the film is, as the actor says, “a small project”, and was, hence, thought to be headed straight to OTT, just like The Great Indian Kitchen. JioCinema had apparently tabled a good offer, which the team was rumoured to have taken up and a streaming announcement was expected. But then, on the sidelines of the promotions of his last film Kannur Squad, Mammotty clarified that Kaathal – The Core would not skip a theatrical outing and that it was meant for big-screen viewing. The film, he said, had been ready for release for a while, but was held back as the team was looking for a clear window to release it after most of the big-ticket movies from other industries had come and gone, like, for instance, Jailer.
Kaathal – The Core will be distributed by the actor’s son Dulquer Salmaan’s Wayfarer Films. It also stars Joji John, Jisshu Sengupta, Chinnu Chandni, Alex Alister, Anagha Akku, Muthumani, among others. The film has music by Mathews Pulickan and cinematography by Salu K Thomas.
