It looks like Mani Ratnam's magnum opus Ponniyin Selvan 2 has become one of the most watched films since its release on Friday (April 28). The film has collected  Rs 100 crore in a span of just two days. The makers today made the announcement of their social media handle. Lyca Productions wrote, "Conquering hearts and box office alike! #PS2 garners over a 100 crore collection worldwide #PS2RunningSuccessfully (sic)."

With Monday, too, turning out to be a government holiday, it looks like the makers will cash in on the May Day holiday (May 1). The film has been receiving acclaim from critics and audiences alike.

The film is an adaptation of Kalki's novel of the same name. The plot revolves around the battle for the Chola throne after the reigning king Sundara Chola falls ill. The star cast for the film includes Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Jayam Ravi, Trisha, Karthi, Jayaram, Sobhita Dhulipala, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Prakash Raj, Parthiban, Sarathkumar, Ashwin Kakumanu, Lal, to name a few.

While AR Rahman has scored the music, Ravi Varman has handled the cinematography, Sreekar Prasad has handled the editing and Thota Tharani has handled the art direction. Ponniyin Selvan is bankrolled  by Mani Ratnam's Madras Talkies and Subaskaran's Lyca Production.

The historical fiction is Mani Ratnam's most ambitious project. It is to be noted that many people from the film industry, including MGR and Kamal Haasan had tried to make the film, but in vain. Kamal Haasan had worked on the first draft of the film, when Mani Ratnam attempted to make the adaptation in the '80s. He said during the audio launch that it was not easy to make a film like this. "I am Mani Ratnam was petrified but at the same time, he had the conviction that he would indeed make the film. It requires a lot of guts."
