In Kiccha Sudeep’s latest release Max, he played a cop called Arjun Mahakshay, who’s been nicknamed Max by the criminal world. Given that the film’s narrative spanned only one night, he is established as this officer who was recently suspended and is set to resume duty the following day. Max has been suspended multiple times, each of which has a story and a destruction of a demon, as head constable Ravanan (Ilavarasu) explains.
Since debutant director Vijay Kartikeyaa, who also wrote the film, did not establish a back story for Arjun Mahakshay, but showed him as a smart, quick-thinking officer who can pack quite a punch, it opened doors to turn Max into a franchise. There could be a prequel about how he came to get the nickname, or multiple sequels – the options are endless. Naturally, fans have been urging Vijay to collaborate with Sudeep again and do Max 2 , which, was recently reported as an in-progress project.
What is the truth? Is Vijay really working on a script for Max 2? The filmmaker addressed this in a recent interview with Cineulagam, saying, “Sudeep sir has said that he definitely wants to collaborate with me again, but we have not decided if it will be Max 2 or a brand-new subject. We are not ruling out the possibility of it being Max 2, but that has to be jointly decided by (Kalaippuli) Thanu sir and Sudeep sir, who co-produced Max. I have a lot of scripts with me, which follow the Max template – thrillers that are entertaining.” He adds that when Max 2 happens, it will be a much bigger film than the original.
The filmmaker also explained that he did not deem it apt to include a flashback to explain Ravanan’s statement or the origin of the nickname in Ma, but that he has answers to all of it as a separate script. This he adds, was not put together in the hope of a sequel, but now that Max is successful and fans have been urging Vijay to do another film and turn it into a franchise, he does not rule out the possibility. “It will be a prequel’, he says.
Max is streaming on Zee5 and/or OTTPlay Premium.
