In the run-up to the release of Kiccha Sudeep’s Max last year, director Vijay Kartikeyaa and producer Kalaippuli S Thanu were not in the book of favourites for fans of the Kannada superstar. From the lack of timely updates, lacklustre promotional content, etc., there wasn’t much to keep fans happy. When the film released, though, they silenced all their critics with the very first show. Everyone was in love with how well Vijay had utilized Sudeep in the film and set up a universe that could be expanded further.
Since Vijay introduced the leading man as a cop, who is just returning to work after a recent suspension, there is immense scope for a back story. As constable Ravanan (Ilavarasu) points out: “There is a tale behind every suspension and each tale has the destruction of a demon”. Why is it that the bad guys shudder when they hear the name Max? That intrigued fans from the moment the film Max came out, and now that reports indicate that Vijay is working on the script for another film in the universe, fans have been debating whether they want a prequel or a sequel.
Right now, netizens are leaning heavily in favour of a prequel. “Prequel barli Arjun mahakshay history gottagbeku”, was a common refrain. Now that the character has been established, netizens feel that Vijay has a lot of room to work as far as further character development and story go. Also, since the story of Max unfolded over one night, there was no need for a love interest, which could be remedied in the next film. While Vijay will likely return to direct Sudeep in another Max movie, whether or not it will be with the same banner remains to be seen. There had been rumours of a difference of opinion between Sudeep and Kalaippuli S Thanu, after the film’s release was delayed.

While Sudeep is heading to the set of Billa Ranga Baashaa as soon as he winds up his Celebrity Cricket League commitment (his team, the Karnataka Bulldozers are in the semi-finals), the actor had said that he’d greenlit another project as well and that his plan was to have at least 2 films ready in the next 18 months.
Max is currently streaming on Zee5 and can be availed on OTTPlay Premium as well.
