Michael Keaton’s Batman is gearing up for a return to the screen yet again. It was announced that the star will reprise his role as the iconic DC superhero in the upcoming Batgirl film, starring Leslie Grace. Warner Bros made this announcement in their 2022 preview press release, writes Collider.

The film will also feature J.K Simmons as Commissioner James Gordon, a character he had played in 2017’s Justice League. Brendan Fraser will play the antagonist Firefly. Jacob Scipio is also set to appear in the film in an undisclosed role.

Keaton had first donned the cape of the masked vigilante in the 1989 film, Batman directed by Tim Burton, a role which he reprised in its 1992 sequel. The film was a hit with fans and critics alike, and is widely considered as one to kickstart the original Batman live-action film series.

It was earlier revealed that Keaton will also portray Batman in the upcoming The Flash film, which stars Ezra Miller as the lead. The film too will see many actors reprise their roles from the DCEU, including Ben Affleck, Michael Shannon and Antje Traue as Batman, General Zod and Faora-Ul respectively.

It is speculated that Batgirl will explore a new part of DC’s planned multiverse, similar to The Flash.

Batgirl is directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah from a script written by Christina Hodson. The film will be produced by Hodson along with Michael E. Uslan, Walter Hamada and Galen Vaisman. It is slated for a release sometime in 2022 and will premiere on US platform HBO Max.
