Set in the titular city, Modern Love Mumbai told contemporary tales of love of people from different walks of life. One of the episodes of the anthology, titled Baai, explored the inner conflicts of a young gay man. The episode was recently fecilitated at this year’s edition of the KASHISH Mumbai International Queer Film Festival.
The festival, which took place from June 1-5, featured a curation of 184 international and Indian titles revolving around stories of queer lives and issues. Baai was facilitated for its ‘fine storytelling’ and the event featured the presence of lead cast members Pratik Gandhi and Ranveer Brar.
Baai revolves around the story of Manzu(Gandhi), a young gay man who shares a deep bond with his grandmother. The episode touched upon themes such as acceptance and family. The episode was directed by Hansal Mehta.
In a statement, Mehta had said that his episode was supposed to be an ‘ode’ to a kind of love that is free of the ‘burden of labels’ and does not bow down to the ‘pressures’ of conformity. In addition to Gandhi and Brar, the episode also featured Tanuja in a pivotal role.
The anthology series consisted of six episodes, helmed by Mehta, Shonali Bose, Vishal Bhardwaj, Alankrita Shrivastava, Dhruv Sehgal and Nupur Asthana. The series, inspired by the New York Times column of the same name, stars Fatima Sana Shaikh, Bhupendra Jadawat, Dilip Prabhavalkar, Sarika, Danesh Razvi, Ahsaas Channa, Tanvi Azmi, Masaba Gupta, Ritwik Bhowmik, Prateik Babbar, Aadar Malik, Dolly Singh, Chitrangda Singh and Arshad Warsi as well.
