While fans of Mammootty and Mohanlal have always been comparing each other’s projects, their box office revenues and the quality of their work, the bone of contention this year seems to be the support the superstars lend to younger filmmakers. While Mammootty has been given his dates to Lijo Jose Pellissery and Nissam Basheer, Mohanlal, according to fans, seem to be still content playing its safe.

As per latest reports, the Drishyam actor, whose last release had him collaborating with B Unnikrishnan, has decided to not sign Tinu Pappachan’s film and instead allotted those dates to veteran filmmaker Siddique.

Tinu, whose two films Swathanthryam Ardharathriyil and Ajagajantharam have been superhits, had earlier told OTTplay that he did approach Mohanlal for dates for a dream project and that he was waiting on the production house Aashirvad Cinemas to make the final call. The filmmaker, meanwhile, also has another big project with Jayasurya coming up.

Siddique, however, had worked with Mohanlal in Ladies and Gentleman and Big Brother – both of which were box office disasters. This could be the reason the fans are unhappy with the rumoured reunion. The filmmaker also has dates of Dileep and Suresh Gopi. It would be interesting to see which project he decides to do first.

However, it would be harsh to say that Mohanlal’s collaboration with people he had earlier worked with doesn’t quite reap the benefits. His next three movies – Jeethu Joseph’s 12th Man, Vysakh’s Monster and Shaji Kailas’ Alone – are all much-awaited because of the quality of work that preceded these.

12thMan is set to drop on Disney+ Hotstar on May 20. The movie, which marks Jeethu’s and Mohanlal’s second successive direct-to-OTT release after Drishyam 2, is a multi-starrer that also has Unni Mukundan and Priyanka Nair in pivotal roles. Mohanlal is currently busy with the shoot of his directorial debut Barroz: The Guardian of D’Gama’s Treasure.
