Mohanlal-starrer Empuraan, directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran, continues to shatter records at the box office, even in the second week of its release. The action-packed movie, which is the sequel to Prithviraj’s directorial debut Lucifer, has become the top-grossing Malayalam film at the worldwide box office, the makers claimed on social media. Read on to know all the details...

'Empuraan is top-grossing Malayalam film'

Empuraan, which was released on March 27, 2025, in five languages, has become the top-grossing Malayalam film at the worldwide box office. Aashirvad Cinemas, which backed the Mohanlal-starrer, shared the update on social media.

“#Empuraan now reigns as the highest-grossing film in Malayalam cinema history. The new industry benchmark,” the L2E makers said on social media.

The collab post was also shared by Empuraan director Prithviraj Sukumaran, Mohanlal and writer Murali Gopy.

However, the makers did not comment about which movie Empuraan had dethroned to become the top-grossing Malayalam film nor did they reveal the worldwide box office numbers of the Lucifer sequel. But Chidambaram’s Manjummel Boys held the record for the highest-grossing Malayalam film till now. As per Sacnilk, Empuraan’s worldwide collections till Saturday were at Rs 236.25 crore, while Manjummel Boys had raked in a total of Rs 241.03 crore.

Empuraan reception

Meanwhile, Empuraan’s staggering success comes even as the film battles a slew of criticisms and right-wing backlash. The right-wing supporters had panned the Mohanlal-starrer for its content. Mohanlal then 'expressed regret' in a Facebook post, which was also shared by Prithviraj Sukumaran. Notably, writer Murali Gopy, who had also penned Lucifer, is yet to make any public comments about the controversy.

Ahead of its release, Empuraan's makers had gone on an extensive promotional campaign that began months before the release. But the film ran into controversy after its release on March 27. Empuraan is the second installment in the three-part Lucifer franchise, and the first film was a runaway hit in 2019. After the controversy, questions were raised about the third part, but producer Antony Perumbavoor had confirmed to media personnel that Lucifer 3 will be made.
