Mohanlal epic film vs Rajinikanth remake: Nikhila Vimal on backing her favourite Malayalam film

Numerous Malayalam films have been remade into other languages, recreating the success of the original, with Mohanlal’s Drishyam films being the most recent example. Another Mohanlal epic film that has spawned remakes in several languages is Manichithrathazhu, which was remade in Tamil as Chandramukhi with Tamil super star Rajinikanth in the lead. Recently, Malayalam actress Nikhila Vimal also listed Manichithrathazhu among her favourite Malayalam films, saying that she believes it is better than its Tamil remake.

Nikhila Vimal on Mohanla’s Manichithrathazhu

In a recent interview with The Cue Studio, Pennu Case actress Nikhila Vimal was asked to name three Malayalam films she would recommend to non-Malayalees. The actress picked Asif Ali’s Kishkindha Kaandam, Prithviraj Sukumaran-led Thirakkatha and Manichithrathazhu.

"I like that movie. I have also gotten into an argument earlier that Manichithrathazhu is better than Chandramukhi... with Prabhu sir, who was the (co-) producer,” said the actress, who has also acted in acclaimed Tamil movies such as Vaazhai.

Where to watch Manichitrathazhu, Chandramukhi

Manichitrathazhu is a 1993 Malayalam film, starring Mohanlal, a stellar Shobana and Suresh Gopi, which is available for streaming on JioHotstar via OTTplay Premium. The Tamil remake of the film, Chandramukhi, is streaming on Sun NXT via OTTplay Premium. Rajinikanth and Jyothika play the lead roles along with Prabhu, who is also the co-producer of the Tamil film. Both Malayalam and its Tamil remake continue to be a fan favourite with each language fans insisting that their movie is the best.

Helmed by veteran director Fazil, Manichithrathazhu follows a young couple - Nakulan and Ganga - who return to their ancestral home, believed to be haunted. After eerie experiences, Nakulan seeks the help of his friend and psychiatrist Dr Sunny (played by Mohanlal).

Mohanlal's upcoming movies include Drishyam 3 and Thudakkam, featuring his daughter Vismaya, while Rajinikanth has Thalaivar 173 and Jailer 2 in the pipeline.

On the other hand, Nikhila Vimal’s latest film is Pennu Case, which preponed its release to January 10, 2026. The film about a con woman opened to middling reviews.
