With 2024 not quite going Mohanlal’s way with Malaikottai Vaaliban and Barroz drawing largely negative to mixed reviews from the audience, the Malayalam superstar will be hoping for a better 2025. And it couldn’t start better than Thudarum – a movie helmed by acclaimed filmmaker Tharun Moorthy that reunites the superstar with actress Shobana.
While the makers are yet to announce the release date of Thudarum, reports suggest that the film will hit theatres on January 30, 2025. Mohanlal, himself, sounded upbeat about the movie, in a recent interview given during the promotions of his directorial debut Barroz.
One of the major highlights of Thudarum is undoubtedly the fan-favourite combination of Mohanlal and Shobana, who had starred together in movies such as Thenmavin Kombathu, Nadodikaattu, Minnaram and Pavithram. The duo had previously shared screen space in Amal Neerad’s Sagar Alias Jacky: Reloaded back in 2009.

Stating that Thudarum is his 56th movie with Shobana, Mohanlal told Pinkvilla, “We are working together after a lot of years for this film. Thudarum is an interesting, emotional movie and she has done a great job in it. She is a wonderful artiste, a beautiful danseuse. It was nice to share screen space with her.”
In an earlier interview with us, the film’s director Tharun told us that it was the “emotional layers” of the story that demanded an actor like Mohanlal, who essays the role of a cab driver in Thudarum. “The movie has moments that aren’t made dramatic for the sake of cinema, it’s all organic and I am sure that would connect to the audience as well,” said the director.
Meanwhile, Mohanlal also opened up about his other big release of 2025 – L2: Empuraan, which is helmed by Prithviraj Sukumaran and is scheduled to hit theatres on March 27, 2025.
“The Lucifer trilogy depended on the success of the first film, and it was entirely up to the director to take on the challenge. I think Prithviraj can bring out a good film because he’s too good,” said the actor.

He also gave an update about the much-awaited Drishyam 3, while hinting that its director Jeethu Joseph is yet to lock a script for the third instalment. “To bring out a sequel is a big challenge because always compare it with the previous film. So, Drishyam 3 is a responsibility,” he concluded.
