Kaathal The Core, the Mammootty starrer has been receiving immense love from audiences for its mature and sensitive portrayal of homosexuality. The Jeo Baby directorial has also initiated a conversation around Malayalam cinema’s portrayals of queer characters.

Interestingly, Mohanlal’s lesser-known performance as a queer character in the 2003-released Kadhayattam short films has now become a major talk in town. A video of the actor’s performance as Allapicha Mollakka is now going viral.

For the uninitiated, Mohanlal played the 10 most famous characters of Malayalam literature in the 2003-released short film series, Kadhayattam. In one of the short films based on legendary writer OV Vijayan’s debut novel Khasakkinte Ithihasam, the veteran superstar played the role of Allapicha Mollakka, a primary Madrasa teacher and mosque Mukri.

This character develops feelings for Naijam Ali, a young boy whom he meets in the valley of Chethali Mala. Mollakka (who is a married man) finds the boy during his quest to find a groom for his daughter, Maimuna. Eventually, Naijam Ali leaves Allapicha Mollakka, and this separation leaves the latter devastated. However, years later, Mollakka finds out that Ali has grown up to be a strong and determined man.

A throwback video from Mohanlal’s Kadhayattam performance is currently going viral on social media. In the video, the veteran actor is seen delivering a stunning performance as always, as Allapicha Mollakka from OV Vijayan’s Khasakkinte Ithihasam. The diehard fans and cine-goers are now lauding the Malayalam superstar for his creative choice to play such a bold character 20 years back, even if it was for a short film.
