A year ago, it was in August that the Kannada film industry saw a ray of hope with the release and success of films like Bheema and Krishnam Pranaya Sakhi. This time, it’s come a few days early, albeit after yet another worrisome first half in which audiences all but deserted movie halls. On July 18, Yuva Rajkumar’s much-awaited sophomore film, Ekka, released in theatres, along with the debut vehicle of Kireeti Reddy, the Kannada-Telugu bilingual Junior. Both films found audiences – Ekka among the Kannada crowd and Junior with the Telugu folks, even though Kireeti claimed that his film was a Kannada original that’s also got a Telugu version.
Only a week later came Raj B Shetty’s latest production venture Su From So, which marks the directorial debut of JP Thuminad. The film has set the Karnataka box office on fire and begins its pan-India and overseas journey in early August. Given the appeal of these films, the assumption is that major OTT platforms will line up for the streaming rights and make them available within a month.

Produced by KRG Studios, PRK Films and Jayanna Films, Ekka is still holding forte, despite the onslaught of films like Su From So and Mahavatar Narasimha, which are doing well at the Karnataka box office. Starring Yuva Rajkumar in the lead, the film directed by Rohit Padaki, also stars Sanjana Anand, Sampadaa Hulivana, Atul Kulkarni, Adityaa, Poorna Mysore, among others. With Yuva’s uncle, Shivarajkumar’s 45 bowing out of the Independence Day race in theatres, this maybe the treat for Kannada audiences that week.
Ekka is expected on Amazon Prime Video on or before August 15

The Kannada-Telugu bilingual directed by Mayabazar 2016 fame Radhakrishna Reddy is the launchpad of Kireeti Reddy, the son of politician-businessman G Janardhan Reddy. The film is ending its theatrical run on July 31 and is expected to advance its OTT release. An August second week outing is being speculated for the film, which has the likes of V Ravichandran, Rao Ramesh, Genelia Deshmukh and Sreeleela onboard.

Raj B Shetty and JP Thuminad’s social drama that’s been cleverly disguised as a horror-comedy is currently enjoying a very good theatrical run, but rumour has it that the makers were in discussion with a major platform for outright sale, which might ensure an on or before 30-day availability for streaming. JP plays the lead in the film, along with Shaneel Gautham, Prakash Thuminad, Mime Ramadas, Deepak Rai Panaje, Sandhya Arekere, while Raj has a pivotal role.
Su From So is expected on Amazon Prime Video by the end of August
