Naane Varuvean is one of Tamil movies which evoked curiousity among cinephiles this year, thanks to the collaboration of Selvaraghavan and Dhanush. The project marked the duo's fourth film together. The sole reason that the actor-filmmaker duo is teaming up after a decade's break was more than enough for moviegoers to pin high hopes on it.
The news of Dhanush essaying dual roles in it left his fans excited as the actor had never attempted playing multiple characters in a film before. The movie was billed as a psychological thriller and hit the screens on September 29.
The film primarily revolves around Prabhu, a family man whose life revolves around his doting wife and loveable daughter. One day, he realizes that his teen daughter has developed some strange behaviour after he finds her talking to herself for a long time.
After consulting a psychiatrist, Prabhu's daughter confesses to him that she is talking to someone who others are not able to see. Upon further treatment, his daughter reveals something which sends shivers down his spine. What did she say and how is Prabhu going to lead a happy life?
The highlight of Naane Varuvean is the performance of Dhanush and Hiya Davey, as the former's daughter. Selvaraghavan tried to strike a balance between making the film a psychological thriller and a horror movie, but it ended up neither here nor there.
Yuvan Shankar Raja's background score is a treat to listen to in a few scenes, but the unconvincing latter half, rushed climax and lack of strong written roles for other actors make the film an average watch. Naane Varuvean has started streaming on Amazon Prime Video a few hours ago.
