Actor Alencier Ley Lopez has been facing a lot of criticism from the film fraternity as well as from those outside the industry for his ‘female figurine’ remark at the 2023 Kerala State Awards ceremony. Speaking about the controversy, actor-director Dhyan Sreenivasan - whose film Nadhikalil Sundari Yamuna is currently running in the theatres - said that Alencier’s comments seemed like a ‘publicity stunt’.
During a press conference held after the release of Nadhikalil Sundari Yamuna, Dhyan said that Alencier’s remarks made him look like a show-off. According to the Kunjiramayanam actor, Alencier should have declined the invitation to the awards ceremony if he was not interested in it.
“Alencier is a friend and more like a brother to me. Some people enjoy showing off and they try to steal the spotlight. I felt he attended the award ceremony to make a controversial statement. It appeared to be nothing more than a publicity stunt,” he further said. When asked about his stand on whether or not any disciplinary action should be taken against Alencier, Dhyan said that it is not his but the system’s responsibility to decide on that.
Alencier’s controversial remark
During his acceptance speech for the ‘Special Jury Award’ that he was honoured with for his performance in Appan, Alencier made some remarks that were considered inappropriate and misogynistic. He asked the government not to award him a ‘female figurine’, and instead requested for a ‘male’ memento. Alencier praised the chief minister of the state as a symbol of masculinity, and asked for a ‘male figurine’ as his award.
Alencier deserves a slap for his remark: Manoj Ramsingh
Following Alencier’s controversial speech, producer and screenplay writer Manoj Ramsingh took to social media to state that Alencier ‘deserves to be slapped’ for his derogatory remarks about women. Meanwhile, Kerala State Higher Education Minister R Bindhu said that Alencier’s speech is an example of male chauvinism.
