Mohanlal and Jeethu Joseph, the celebrated actor-director duo of Malayalam cinema, are joining hands for the fifth time for the upcoming movie Neru. The project, which is touted to be a courtroom drama, stars the Malayalam superstar in the role of an advocate after a 13-year gap.

Priya Mani is playing the female lead in the movie, which is slated to hit theatres on December 22, 2024. Ahead of the big release, the makers released the much-awaited Neru trailer on social media today.

The highly promising trailer, which has a duration of 2.16 minutes, hints that Neru is going to be an intense courtroom drama that revolves around a rare and publicised case. Mohanlal is introduced as Vijaya Mohanan, a senior advocate who has been staying away from the practise for quite a while and considers himself unfit for the job. However, he is forced to make a comeback to his profession as a special public prosecutor to handle the case of a visually impaired girl (played by Anaswara Rajan). Priya Mani and Siddique appear in the roles of defence lawyers in the film.

It is quite exciting to see Mohanlal in a rooted, author-backed role after a very long gap on celluloid with Neru. The Malayalam superstar impresses with his dialogue delivery in the trailer, especially in the portions in which he reveals he is underconfident and has ‘lost his touch’. The veteran actor also simply shines in the emotional sequences in the trailer with his signature understated intensity, which was missing from his performances for a very long time.

The Neru trailer suggests that director Jeethu Joseph and his team have created a moving courtroom drama that will keep the audience on the edge of their seats to its very end. The makers’ move to not reveal anything more about the plot and the key characters in detail is appreciable. However, the rivalry between Mohanlal’s Vijaya Mohanan and the characters played by Priya Mani and Siddique does look cliched and reminds us of many earlier Malayalam films that had similar angles.

All about Neru

Along with Mohanlal and Priya Mani, the Jeethu Joseph directorial features a stellar star cast including Siddique, Jagadish, Anaswara Rajan, Ganesh Kumar, Kalesh Ramanand, Santhi Mayadevi, Nandu, Dr. Sree Dhanya, Harikrishnan, Aditi Ravi, and others in pivotal roles. Santhi Mayadevi, an actress who is also a real-life advocate, and director Jeethu Joseph wrote Neru together.

Vishnu Shyam composed the music score. Satheesh Kurup is the director of photography. Vinayak VS handles the editing. Neru is bankrolled by Antony Perumbavoor under the popular production banner, Aashirvad Cinemas.
