The creators of Game of Thrones are leading a new challenge for streaming giant Netflix before its science fiction release. Its rival streaming platform Peacock is already releasing the Chinese adaptation of Liu Cixin’s novel series today, which serves as the inspiration for both Netflix and the Peacock version. Here’s more about two adaptations and when to stream them.
The US streaming service Peacock approved Tencent's Three-Body, a Chinese adaptation of Liu Cixin's epic sci-fi thriller novel of the same name, to debut weeks before Netflix's high-profile version in March. Released globally last year, Tencent’s Three Body Problem adaptation will now be streaming on Peacock, with 30 episodes releasing on February 10.
The official announcement on Friday sparked conversations about a tough clash between the two OTT platforms, as Netflix is now posed with a visible threat to its audience after Peacock’s Lunar New Year release decision.
While the Tencent adaptation is more inclined towards the Chinese characters grappling with the mysterious alien invasion, its Netflix counterpart is more focused on the global audience with a Hollywood star cast and is not rigorously following the novel. Another major difference between the two projects is that Netflix is offering the novel adaptation in a limited 8-episodic structure, unlike the Peacock version, which unveiled the author’s narrative of the Remembrance of Earth’s Past trilogy.
Take a look at the Chinese version:
Netflix is gearing up for its mysterious science fiction thriller, slated for a March 21 release. The upcoming series 3 Body Problem is a collaboration of prominent writer-producer Alexander Woo (The Terror: Infamy, True Blood), alongside multiple Emmy-winning creators D.B. Weiss and David Benioff (Game of Thrones). The trio unveils the multi-layered enigma projecting the unexpected deaths of science experts after a sudden alien invasion.
The star-studded ensemble cast features Benedict Wong, Jess Hong, Jovan Adepo, Eiza González, and John Bradley. Only time will tell which adaptation of Three Body will get praise and love from critics.
