Lover OTT release date - Here's when to stream Manikandan's film on Disney+ Hotstar

Lover, the recently released Tamil film starring actors Manikandan and Sri Gouri Priya in the lead roles, is set to stream digitally on Disney+ Hotstar from March 27, the platform announced on social media. The film opened in theatres for the Valentine's Day weekend on February 9 and received positive reviews upon release.

Written and directed by filmmaker Prabhuram Vyas in his feature film directorial debut, Lover is backed by Million Dollar Studios and MRP Entertainment, the banners which earlier backed Manikandan-starrer 2023 hit film Good Night. The director had earlier helmed the web series Livin.

Lover was celebrated for its subtle and nuanced take on modern-day relationships. The film follows the lives of two young professionals, Arun and Divya who navigate their relationship amid the toxic behaviour showed by the man. Apart from Manikandan and Sri Gouri Priya, the film also stars Kanna Ravi, Geetha Kailasam, Harini, and Harish Kumar, among others.

Theatrical run of Lover

Lover released in theatres along with Rajinikanth-starrer Lal Salaam. Upon its release, Lover received positive reception with critics praising the acting chops of Manikandan and Sri Gouri Priya along with Vyas' writing. OTTplay’s review of the film reads, “Lover is a modern-age romantic drama that makes you want to put yourself first among the many others you love and care for.”

However, that could not help the film from becoming a box office storm. As per reports, the film could collect only about Rs 8 crore at the box office in Tamil Nadu at the end of its third week. It is expected that the film will gain its audience once again after it is made available for streaming.

Is beginner’s luck continuing?

In 2023, Tamil cinema saw a wave of fresh voices delivering hits at the box office. After films like Dada, Por Thozhil, Good Night, and Parking, helmed by first-time directors became a hit and saved the theatres, 2024 seems to continue the charm. This year already witnessed two quality films delivered by debutants in the form of Blue Star and Lover.
