R Muthukumar's Ayali has bagged the award for the Best Web Series at OTTplay Awards 2023. The award was presented to director R Muthukumar and the show's producer S Kushmavathy at a star-studded event held in Mumbai on October 29. In her acceptance speech, the producer said, “We are standing before you with a lot of gratitude today. We are very happy to receive this award. Thank you so much and thank god. Ayali truly deserves it. Ayali has been a trendsetter series in south India. Thanks to OTTplay awards. Keep rocking. This motivation will motivate us to produce more such content. Thanks to the entire team of Ayali.”

Ayali, which dropped on ZEE5 earlier this year, revolves around the life and struggle of teenage girl Tamizhselvi (Abi Nakshatra) in Veerappannai, a fictional village, which is bound by patriarachal notions. The school-going teenager defies all odds and fights against the 500-year-old deep-rooted customs and oppression against women to pursue her dream of becoming a doctor. The series touches upon sensitive subjects like puberty, child marriage, discrimination against women, marriage without consent to name a few.

The show starred Abi Nakshatra, Anumol, Madhankumar, Linga, Singampuli, Lovelyn Chandrasekar, Gayathri Thara, to name a few. Ayali also has special appearances by Lakshmi Priya, Smruthi Venkat, Bagavathi Perumal and Kodangi Vadivelu. Ayali received a lot of praise for its take against patriarchy.

Special screenings of the show were held for girl students in the presence of the Tamil Nadu Minister of School Education Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi.
