Director Pa Ranjith, a prominent filmmaker in the Tamil cinema space, had earlier announced a sequel to his sports drama Sarpatta Parambarai. However, the director had gone on to work with Vikram in Thangalaan and is now making his next feature titled Vettuvam. However, the director did give an update on the sequel and what is the status of the project.

Sarpetta Parambarai is one of the critically acclaimed sports drama to have come out in Tamil cinema. Pa Ranjith had helmed with, the cast including Arya, Dushara Vijayan, Pasupathy, Shabeer Kallarakal, the sequel for the film was announced.
However, while it has been some time since the announcement, in a recent podcast, Pa Ranjith opened up about it. Speaking to Avudaiappan Talks channel, Ranjith said, "I was supposed to have completed Vettuvam in July, but it got bigger. We have about 15-20 days of shoot, and once that is over, I will have to take up Sarpatta 2, the script work which is already done. I should re-write and start with the shooting. It will be more political drama and will be interesting. The boxing parts have come out well. We are trying to recreate the world.” The director did not reveal if the film will be a prequel or sequel.
