Pavail Gulati recently shared screen space with Shahid Kapoor in Deva. Directed by Rosshan Andrrews', the cop drama hit the silver screen on January 31, 2025, and got mixed feedback. Those who watched Shahid and Pavail's movie know its climax was tweaked. In his latest interview with a tabloid, Pavail revealed why Deva's climax differed from Prithviraj Sukumaran's 2013 Malayalam movie Mumbai Police.

Pavail Gulati on changes in Deva's climax

In a conversation with Mid-Day, Pavail Gulati reveals the feedback he received for Deva's climax. The actor said, "It’s subjective because I got calls, saying, ‘We loved the climax.’ Others said it was a little underwhelming. I loved the climax, where the hero is also the villain."

For the unversed, the Malayalam film's climax featured the protagonist turning out to be gay. On the other hand, the Shahid Kapoor-starrer climax showcased the actor's character Dev Ambre as an anti-hero.

When Pavail was asked if Hindi cinema is hesitant to show its leading man as gay, the actor shared, "It’s not that the Hindi film audience or the industry isn’t ready for such characters. Rajkummar Rao played a gay cop in Badhaai Do [2022] and was loved unanimously. I think the makers wanted to reimagine the film."

Gulati continued to mention it took him a while to understand Deva's huge scale. The actor said that the stylized filmmaking was 'novel for him'. However, he feels Rosshan Andrrews is the master of stylized filmmaking. He considers him his 'guru' and calls him his 'perfect chela'.
