Ponniyin Selvan-1, the third-highest-grossing Indian movie of the year, has outperformed Brahmastra Part One-Shiva and Vikram's box office earnings. The Mani Ratnam directorial made more than Rs 450 crore worldwide thus far, according to the reports. The multi-starrer has been playing in theatres for 19 days and is still going strong.

As of September 17, we hear, Ponniyin Selvan-1 had a worldwide total of Rs 455 crore, which included a noteworthy Rs 161 crore ($20 million) from just abroad. Brahmastra, directed by Ayan Mukerji, grossed Rs 431 crore worldwide, whereas Vikram, featuring Kamal Haasan, made Rs 443 crore.

Ponniyin Selvan-1 is edging closer to the Rs 475 threshold globally and is probably going to cross it in a few days. This one accomplished the milestone of earning more than Rs 200 crore in Tamil Nadu alone.

OTTplay has learned from sources that cinema halls are ready to screen Ponniyin Selvan-1, despite the Diwali releases; Sivakarthikeyan's Prince and Karthi's Sardar. Sreedhar Pillai, a trade analyst, claims that this has been effective in bringing senior citizens to the movies, ensuring the continuation of the performance, even though it is in its third week.

Notably, RRR, directed by SS Rajamouli, garnered a worldwide total of Rs 1112 crore, dwarfing PS-1's revenues, while the Kannada film KGF: Chapter 2 surpassed all box office records with a take of Rs 1207 crore. It is safe to assume that PS-1 will not come close to these figures. In any case, the movie has achieved enormous success and is currently the second-highest-grossing Tamil movie of all time, trailing only 2.0, starring Rajinikanth and Akshay Kumar, which had earned over Rs 700 crore.

Ponniyin Selvan is a fictionalised account of the Cholas' splendour, whose cultural influence may still be seen in contemporary Tamil Nadu.

Author and journalist Kalki Krishnamurthy serialised the Ponniyin Selvan story in Kalki, a Tamil magazine, in 1955. The massive historical novel, which has multiple editions and is translated into English, is close to 2,000 pages long.

Ponniyin Selvan-1, which was released in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi on September 30, marked Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s comeback to Tamil cinema after a decade. The Bollywood actor is cast in two roles, with queen Nandini taking centre stage. More of her other role, Mandakini Devi, the silent mother of Nandini, will appear in the second instalment.

In a recent interview, Mani Ratnam stated that the sequel to the franchise will hit theatres in another six to nine months and that the crew is working on post-production. In the summer of 2023, Ponniyin Selvan-2 is scheduled to be released in theatres.

(PS-1 will stream on Amazon Prime soon)
