The box office storm created by Ponniyin Selvan 1 last year needs no introduction. The Mani Ratnam film grossed around 500 crores from across the world. The hype for Ponniyin Selvan 2 was unprecedented as movie buffs were curious to know how the filmmaker is going to culminate the much-awaited franchise.

However, Ponniyin Selvan 2 lacked adequate buzz among cinephiles despite the leading actors indulging in aggressive promotional activities. Though a decent opening was expected on day one, many were sure that it wouldn't surpass the collection PS 1 earned on the first day.

It's been two weeks since the sequel was released and the film's collection is more or less equal to what many had predicted. It looks like it will be a Himalayan task for the movie to enter the 400 crore club. The makers had officially announced recently that it has comfortably entered the 300 crore club.

They have now come up with another news to rejoice for fans of the franchise. Ponniyin Selvan 2 is currently the highest grossing Tamil film of the year. Vijay-starrer Varisu was the biggest hit of Kollywood in 2023. The multi-starrer period movie has surpassed the family drama to emerge the numero uno project.

With more than six months left, the trade feels that Vijay-starrer Leo is the frontrunner when it comes to outdoing this feat in 2023. The Lokesh Kanagaraj directorial which is hitting screens in multiple languages on October 19 has good chances of ending up as the biggest Tamil film this year.

For now, the next hurdle for PS 2 is the 350 crore club. With no big films in Kollywood in coming weeks and overseas markets contributing decent collections, we have to wait and watch for a few more days.
