The makers of Ponniyin Selvan announced yesterday that they are coming up with a surprise for film buffs today, leaving everyone guessing. Unsurprisingly, the team has now revealed the much-awaited update on the release date of its second installment. The sequel to Mani Ratnam's Ponniyin Selvan 1 will hit the screens on April 28, 2023.
The social media handles of Lyca Productions and Madras Talkies, which jointly bankrolled the mammoth projects, have made the announcement along with a few intriguing shots from Ponniyin Selvan 2 aka PS 2.
The movie thus becomes the first Tamil project to officially announce a summer release in 2023. The first part of the two-film franchise released in theatres on September 30, and went on to become the highest grossing movie in Tamil Nadu. The film surpassed Kamal Haasan's Vikram to achieve the honourable feat.
Movie lovers are now curious to know when the team would begin promoting the sequel across the country. Ponniyin Selvan 1 became a smashing hit in Kerala and overseas markets as well. The sequel is expected to open big, and the trade is looking forward to the exceptional day one and weekend numbers.
It is also interesting to wait and see if the movie would have a box office clash with any other film. Rajinikanth's Jailer is said to be having a summer release, but the makers are yet to come up with an appropriate date.
The digital rights of Ponniyin Selvan 2 have also been bagged by Amazon Prime Video. Like the first part, the sequel, too, will have an IMAX version, and fans can't wait to watch the visual spectacle on the big screen.
