Ponniyin Selvan 2: Here's when the much-awaited sequel to the blockbuster Mani Ratnam film will be released

The multi-starrer flick Ponniyin Selvan 1 has exceeded expectations by miles in terms of its making and box office performance. The Mani Ratnam directorial is inching towards 400 crores at the worldwide box office. The movie is all set to surpass Kamal Haasan's Vikram to emerge as the highest grossing film in Tamil Nadu.

This is also one of the few Tamil films in recent years to have had repeat value, thanks to the presence of talented actors like Vikram, Aishwarya Rai, Karthi, Trisha and Jayam Ravi among others, effective background score by AR Rahman, stunning visuals by Ravi Varman, adequate editing by Sreekar Prasad and grand production design by Thota Tharrani.

All eyes are now on the film's sequel, the shooting of which has already been completed. The post-production of Ponniyin Selvan 2 is expected to begin soon, and makers are likely to make an announcement on its release date.

However, trusted sources say that the sequel will hit the screens as a summer release in the next year. According to the grapevine, Ponniyin Selvan 2 is likely to be released in April 2023. An official update is awaited from Lyca Productions and Madras Talkies, who have bankrolled the project.

Meanwhile, Karthi's Sardar will release later this month and Vikram will begin shooting for Pa Ranjith's untitled project. Jayam Ravi, who has four films in his kitty, is expecting to release one or two of them before the Mani Ratnam movie arrives next year.

The suspense associated with Aishwarya Rai's character is one of the major reasons to look forward to the second installment. Film lovers are eager to know how their favourite characters would be presented in the sequel.
