The much-awaited movie of Tamil cinema, Ponniyin Selvan, hit the screens yesterday across the world. The Mani Ratnam directorial has garnered largely positive reviews from critics, and film buffs are now eager to know about its box office numbers.

According to sources, the big budget project has raked in ₹25 crores from across Tamil Nadu on day one. This is now the third biggest opener in the state this year after Vijay's Beast and Ajith's Valimai. On day one, the movie has managed to outsmart the numbers earned by Kamal Haasan's Vikram which is currently the highest grosser in Tamil Nadu.

Mani's Madras Talkies and Lyca Productions have jointly bankrolled the film which has opened to phenomenal numbers in the overseas market as well. The movie has collected around ₹17 crores from the US market, including premiere and first day numbers.

It has also emerged as the highest collecting Tamil movie on day one in OS markets in 2022, surpassing Beast and Vikram. Australia, Sri Lanka, UK and Malaysia are a few other countries where the film has opened to good numbers. Ponniyin Selvan aka PS1 has grossed ₹3 crores and ₹2 crores from Kerala and Hindi box office respectively.

Going by the current trend, the movie is set to rake in extraordinary numbers in the weekend in all territories where it has opened well. Film lovers in Tamil Nadu are going gaga over its making, performances of actors, Rahman's background score, Thota Tharrani's art direction and Ravi Varman's visuals.

The film is expected to break many records in Tamil Nadu, if it manages to pass the Monday test in flying colours. What remains to be seen is the figures it would collect from other states in the coming days.
