It looks like the good old days are back in Kollywood. After Kamal Haasan-starrer Vikram, which went on to gross more than 400 crores at the box office worldwide, Mani Ratnam's Ponniyin Selvan is following its footsteps. The movie grossed 80 crores from its multiple versions from across the globe on day one.
After its three days of humongous performance in movie halls, powered by positive response from critics and film lovers, the multi-starrer flick has grossed 200 crores. The movie becomes the first Tamil project to amass such a huge number in its first three days of release.
Lyca Productions and Madras Talkies, which have jointly bankrolled Ponniyin Selvan, announced the same from their social media handles, sending Kollywood fans into a tizzy. Tamil Nadu, Kerala and a few overseas markets are some of the territories where the movie's performance is on a rampage mode.
In many theatres in Tamil Nadu, tickets have been sold for the coming weekend as well, a new record in the history of Kollywood. Going by the current trend, the film entering the coveted 500 crores mark doesn't seem to be impossible. Shankar's 2.0, starring Rajinikanth and Akshay Kumar, is currently the only Tamil project that has managed to find a place in the elite list.
The movie which is based on the novel of the same name, which touches upon the various conflicts pertaining to the Chola kingdom, managed to gross around 70 crores only from Tamil Nadu in the first three days of its release.
Ponniyin Selvan is also that multi-starrer which Tamil film lovers have been looking forward to since a long time. All eyes are now on the announcement of its second part in 2023.
