Could Mammootty’s Bramayugam put the brakes on Premalu’s stupendous box-office run? That’s the question that has been hanging in the air for the fans of Malayalam cinema. Mammootty’s film has now released in theatres and is expected to be the biggest competitor for Naslen and Mamitha Baiju’s romcom this week, considering the buzz surrounding Biju Menon’s Thundu, which will release on February 16, has been low.

Now, the makers of Premalu have already announced that it’s game on and that the film featuring youngsters that also include Shyam Mohan, Sangeeth Prathap and Akhila Bhargavan has what it takes to take on Mammootty’s supernatural survival thriller.

It’s Premalu vs Bramayugam at the Kerala box office

Premalu has emerged the winner at the box office so far in February raking in a cool sum of over Rs 11 Cr. The team of the Girish AD also made it clear that the film has something extra that the black-and-white film Bramayugam doesn’t.

Taking a dig at the megastar’s film, the cast and crew shared a new poster from the movie featuring Naslen and Sangeeth during one of their booze sessions in Premalu. The poster also came with a message – “Life would be colourful when you have an Amal Davis” – hinting at the vibrant pair the duo makes.

While the team didn’t make any direct dig at Bramayugam and instead chose to highlight the friendship in the film, with its co-producer Dileesh Pothan saying, “The Nation salutes this friendship”, and Mamitha captioning it, “Amal Davis is a mood”; the colour statement wasn’t missed by the die-hard of fans of Mammootty.

Mammootty’s Bramayugam opens to positive response

Meanwhile, Bramayugam opened to largely positive response after its initial few shows, with many praising Mammootty’s performance as Kodumon Potti in the film. Arjun Ashokan and Sidharth Bharathan also play equally-prominent roles in the period film set in the 17th century and dealing with two men trying to escape their powerful captor.

It needs to be seen whether the audience would pick Bramayugam over Premalu in the coming weekend, or if both films – much like Tovino Thomas’ Anweshippin Kandethum – would have a good number of housefull shows.

If Biju Menon’s Thundu as well as Soubin Shahir’s Manjummel Boys, which is set to hit theatres next week, get a good run too, February 2024 could be a blockbuster month for Malayalam cinema.
