National Award-winning cinematographer Venu is known for his collaborations with filmmakers like Mani Kaul, John Abraham, and MT Vasudevan Nair. Speaking about the effect of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in cinematography in a recent interview, the veteran cinematographer said that he is scared of the changes it might bring to the field.

Venu: I am concerned about the potential of AI

Venu believes that AI has the potential to create anything that anyone desires, which is a frightening thing. However, he is optimistic that the creativity of a cinematographer is something that cannot be replaced by AI, and therefore the profession will continue to thrive. Venu also mentions that AI techniques were once only seen in science fiction horror films, but now they have become a reality.

"AI is an inevitable change. Earlier, only painters could create artwork and photographers could take pictures. Later, with the arrival of cinematographers, the best one was determined by his/her ability to rotate the camera at a constant speed. As time progressed, situations changed, and AI is now a significant part of this change", Venu told Samakalika Malayalam.

'AI cannot replace cinematographers'

While speaking about the potential threats of AI to cameramen, Venu pointed out that it can only be useful when it is directed by the creative ideas of a human being. In his opinion, cinematography is a creative profession that demands a human touch and cannot be replaced by Artificial Intelligence.

Venu's next is Joju George's Pulimada

Venu's upcoming project as a cameraman is the Joju George and Aishwarya Rajessh-starrer Pulimada, which is directed by AK Sajan. The movie is a black comedy that revolves around the life of a bachelor police constable named Vincent, who is also a migrant farmer from Wayanad. On his wedding day, Vincent receives some shocking news that sets off a chain of events, forming the plot of Pulimada.

Venu is back as a cameraman for another director's film after a long gap. Along with Joju George and Aishwarya Rajessh, the film also stars Lijomol Jose, Chemban Vinod Jose, Jaffer Idukki, and Johny Antony in supporting roles.
