The grief of losing a loved one is an emotion that even adults often find difficult to navigate. How would it then be for a young child, who has lost not one, but both parents? This is what debutant director Sumanth Bhat has explored in his festival darling film Mithya, which will be in theatres on March 7 .

Ahead of the film’s theatrical outing, the trailer of the film produced by Rakshit Shetty’s Paramvah Studios, will be released on February 26 at 6 pm, on the auspicious occasion of Mahashivaratri. Mithya, which has travelled the globe and been widely appreciated at film festivals across the world, tells the tale of an 11-year-old boy, who not only has to deal with the circumstances surrounding the loss of his parents, but also a relocation from the familiar environs of Mumbai to Udupi and having to live with extended family, even as they debate who should have his custody.

Back in 2022, when Rakshit officially announced the film, he had written, “How does a little heart process pain? Or does it even? Here’s an intense story full of emotional beats trying to trace answers to these questions. I was so moved when I first heard this achingly beautiful rendition,” hinting at the immense grief that is a part of this journey.

Athish Shetty is the protagonist of the tale, with Prakash Thumminad and Roopa Varkady also on the cast. The film has music by Midhun Mukundan and cinematography by Udit Khurana. The film is the latest Paramvah Studios presentation of directorial works by members of Rakshit’s group of trusted writers, the Seven Odds. While Abhijit Mahesh’s Bachelor Party kicked it off, Chandrajith Belliappa followed with Ibbani Tabbida Ileyali. Mithya is next, with films like Abracadabra and Strawberries, still pending.

Rakshit has always been clear that there’s a clear road map for the directors he is introducing, letting them present the stories in their first films in the language of their hearts. The hope, he’d said, was that they would, in due course of time, learn to tell these stories in commercially viable formats.
