Of late, OTT platforms have changed the digital rights game in a big way. They are no longer paying huge amounts to makers and are instead shelling out limited budgets to acquire the rights to star-hero films, especially in Telugu cinema. Only a few actors like Nani, Ram Charan, Jr NTR, and a handful of others are still managing to secure massive OTT deals.
Some time back, we also revealed that big players like Netflix are now paying makers based on a film’s box office outcome. The OTT rights of a star-hero film are initially locked at a certain price. However, there is now a new clause in place.
If the film fails at the box office, a chunk of the agreed amount is reduced before being paid to the makers. This new practice has been followed for films like Akhanda 2 and The Raja Saab, both of which failed to perform at the box office.

However, things have taken a different turn for Ram Charan’s biggie Peddi, which is being directed by Buchi Babu Sana. We at OTTplay have already reported that Netflix has bagged the digital rights to Peddi for a whopping Rs 105 crore, the highest ever for any Ram Charan film to date. Now comes an interesting twist.
We have learned that the makers have introduced a new condition to Netflix. If Peddi clicks at the box office and crosses a certain benchmark, the OTT price will be strategically increased and the additional amount will be paid to the makers.

As reported earlier, if the film fails, Netflix will reduce a specific amount before settling the deal. But in this case, the makers of Peddi have added a reverse clause, if the film becomes a hit, Netflix will have to pay more.
A source close to the unit reveals that Netflix is not very keen on this idea, and discussions are still ongoing. Janhvi Kapoor plays the female lead in this film, which is being backed by the makers of Pushpa and mounted on a lavish scale. AR Rahman has composed the music, and the first song, Chikiri, has already created a sensation.

There is also news that the film will not be out on the said date as Dhurandhar 2 is releasing along the same time. With the film aiming for a March 27, 2027 release, and competition from Dhurandhar 2, this new clause has landed the OTT deal in a bit of a soup. Let’s see how things unfold in the days to come.
