It’s been a decade since Kannada actress Ramya stepped back from a career in films and plunged head-long into politics. From an active political career, including a brief stint as the Mandya MP and then a behind-the-scenes role as a national party’s social media in-charge, Ramya had her hands full. Throughout all this time, fans were hopeful that she’d return to acting soon enough, but even after she gave up on active politics, films were not on her horizon.

Ramya: I've not been able to find something interesting

In the last few years, there were a couple of films that Ramya was initially said to be a part of but didn’t do eventually. She has indicated that a comeback is on the cards but has not given a timeline for it. Given that she very rarely makes public appearances, when she does, one question that she routinely faces is if she will be back in films anytime soon. Ramya was at a trailer launch event recently and when faced with the query said that she was not ruling out a comeback, but that it would have to be with a role that is different from what she’s done earlier.

“I’ve not been able to find something that is interesting. I don’t want to do the same old stuff again. If I have to go back on a film set, it has to be to give audiences something different and interesting. So far I have not found anything, but if I do, I will definitely produce and act in it,” she said speaking to TV9 Kannada. But what about her production banner? “There are no plans for me to act or to produce something from the banner. If a good script comes my way, I will definitely do it,” she winds up.

Meanwhile, it was sometime after the Covid-19 pandemic that Ramya announced that she was turning producer. Her first venture would be written and directed by Raj B Shetty, in which she would make her big screen comeback. The film, Swathi Mutthina Male Haniye, was officially announced and the team began preparations to go on floors when Ramya felt that the role was better suited for a relatively newer face and excused herself.

Thereafter, KRG Studios roped her in for a pivotal role in the Rohit Padaki-directed two-part gangster tale Uttarakaanda. Ramya was at the muhurtha of the film. But months later, when they were finally set to start shooting, Ramya was no longer a part of Uttarakaanda. The role went to Aishwarya Rajesh, who makes her Kannada film debut with Uttarakaanda.
