Author Fakir Muhammad Katpadi is well-regarded in the Kannada literary circles for his realistic portraits of the Muslim community in southern Karnataka. A native of Udupi, the 74-year-old novelist has prolifically captured the idiosyncrasies, customs and everyday lives of the people of the community and one such poignant story is being brought to life in the form of a feature film.
Ramzan, a film based on the author's novel 'Nombu', will be releasing in cinema halls on April 21. Directed by Panchakshari CE and produced by Madivalappa Gogi, Ramzan attempts to trace the pious period of Ramadan for the Muslim community with nombu (the concept of fasting) becoming the crux of the Fakir Muhammad Katpadi story.
"I was approached by many filmmakers in the past, including a team that promised to cast a leading Malayalam actor, but I was convinced for many reasons. But when Panachakshari CE came to me wanting to adapt the novel into a film, I was very satisfied with the honesty and integrity he carried. The story of Nombu, in essence, explores the concept of 'hunger' and how the rich and the poor tackle it in contrasting manners. As someone who grew up in a religious household, I have personally seen the impact of hunger on life and how it alters the way one functions. I was able to channel my own personal experiences as a child while writing this story," said Fakir Muhammad Katpadi during the recent song launch event in Bengaluru.
The cast of the film Ramzan includes Sangamesh Upase, Premavati, Bebi Ishani, Bhasker Manipal, Aryan, Adhyatha Bhat, Manjunath and others. KM Indra has scored the music of the film with Rangaswamy G handling cinematography and D. Malli handling editing.
