Recently, actress Rashmika Mandanna – who will soon headline the movie ‘Animal’, was prey to a deepfake video that surfaced online. The 27-year-old actress spoke vocally about the issue and even filed a police complaint in the said matter. In the video, the actor’s face was imposed on another woman's body by misusing artificial intelligence tools. Today, a positive development has come in this case. The Indian Government assured that it is in touch with social media companies and monitoring the situation.

This evening, Union Minister of Communications, Electronics and IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw spoke in detail about the deepfake videos and what action the Central government is planning to take in this regard.

"We have all agreed that within the next about 10 days, we will come up with clear actionable items... All the companies, all the platforms, and the entire industry understood that this is not free speech. They understood that this is something that is really harmful to society. They understood the need for much heavier regulation on this,” said the Union Minister.

The Union Minister further detailed that they are drafting a resolution which will soon be put into action. “So, we agree that we will start drafting the regulation today. We wll start drafting the regulations today itself. And within a very short time frame, we will have a new set of regulations for deep fake...,” said the Union Minister.

On November 11, the Delhi Police wrote to Meta (a company that runs Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp) to provide the URL of the account from which the 'deepfake' video of actor Rashmika Mandanna was shared on social media. The move came a day after the city police filed an FIR in connection with the incident.
